Colour Sorting Activities for Toddlers

Imagine this - You are visiting a stationery store.

Everything is arranged alphabetically! Everything from books, board games, balls, bats, binder clips, is available in one aisle. And where would you find binder clips - under B or C, since some may refer to it as binder clips or just clips?

Sounds chaotic, right?

In our daily lives, we often arrange our products, objects, ideas into categories or convenient groups. We sort things into categories so that it is easier for us to manage them.

That’s why sorting is important. It makes our lives easier.

Early experiences in sorting things into small groups based on some common characteristics helps toddlers or young learners to observe how things are similar and different. This is an important early literacy and maths skill.

A child typically learns to differentiate between colours between 18-24 months of age. They may not know the names of the colours but they can recognise them.

Here is a list of activities that you can use to engage your toddler in colour sorting -

All you need to do is give your toddler the objects to sort and a sorting tray. You can buy the sorting tray here

If you do not have a sorting tray, you can always give them a couple of bowls into which they can sort or an empty masala box or a steel plate with compartments. The idea is to have a different place for each object.

Another way to do it is to place/ stick the coloured sheet on the floor so that your toddler can place the objects on the respective coloured sheet.

Depending on the age of your toddler and their readiness for this activity, you can always make it simple by just offering 2 colours or more complex by putting up 6-8 colours.

As he or she works through this activity, your toddler develops visual discrimination skills, fine motor skills as well as colour recognition & names of colours.

In short, this is super simple for us to set up, challenging & educational for a toddler, and helps in skill development of your little one.

Enjoy!
