Why choose Cotton for Infants?

Across generations, it has been recommended to use cotton for your babies. But ever wonder why?

When my daughter was born a few years ago, I remember my mother-in-law stitching swaddles and cloth nappies from pure white cotton fabric. Now, this is very common scenario in Indian households.

There are a couple of reasons why cotton fabrics is preferred for your little ones.

Newborn babies and infants have very delicate and soft skin. Their skin is so much thinner than an adult's. Cotton fabrics, by nature, are soft and gentle on the skin and they tend to get softer through washes.

Cotton fibres are naturally hydrophilic in nature, that is they tend to attract the water molecules around them. They can hold water 24-27 times their weight. Due to this property, cotton absorbs any moisture that is present on the body and can transfer the moisture through the garments.

What does this mean for your baby?

Your baby remains dry and cool for longer periods of time since the cotton garment absorbs any perspiration thus keeping your baby comfortable. Considering Indian summers and humidity throughout the year in different regions, cotton garments should be preferred, especially for children.

Since it is a natural fabric, cotton is hypo-allergenic. The possibility of an allergic reaction to cotton or rashes due to cotton garments is very low.

Cotton is also low maintenance. Easy to wash and dry - this is an important factor considering you would be washing your infant's clothing quite often. Stains too, can be easily washed from cotton fabrics.

All in all, cotton garments are the perfect choice for newborns and infants.
